My First Skool Jurong celebrated Racial Harmony Day on 21st July 2010.
The K2 children did a cookery lesson on making ‘Puri’, an Indian pancake.
At first teacher demonstrated to the children the method of making the pancake. Children then had hands-on experience on using the rolling pin.
Teacher is frying the ‘puri’ while Rui Qi is watching intently. Heather said, ”I know how to roll the dough! Is it flat enough?”
Rui Qi, with the help of the teacher is slowly putting in the flattened dough into the hot oil.
Teachers showing Heather and Rui Qi how to hold the rolling pin to flatten the dough.

Heather is carefully putting her dough in the oil, while teacher holds her hand. The ‘puri’ puff into a ball.
Baxton confidently slipped the dough which he had made, into the oil. He asked, ”Why does the ‘puri’ become like a ball?’’ Teacher explained that the air that was trapped inside the dough had caused the puri to puff up when it is fried. This is because air expands when heated.
Lu Kiat was engrossed in rolling his dough. He said, ”When you add some flour on the dough, then it is not so sticky.”
Children eating their puri with chick pea curry on banana leaves.. Janani said,”I like spicy food but not so spicy!”.
Most of the Chinese children had a novel had they gotten a chance to eat with their fingers. Lai Jun Meng did not know how to eat the puri, but after watching Adrianna using both her hands to tear her puri into small pieces and then dipping it into the curry, he followed suit.
